US Congress takes next step to make daylight saving time permanent

The US House of Representatives has voted 308-117 to make daylight saving time permanent, ending the twice-yearly clock changes for Americans.

Republican Scott DesJarlais, who presided over the vote, played a clip of The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" on his phone during the final count, drawing laughs.

The issue has built bipartisan momentum for years, with President Donald Trump pledging to end clock changes after returning to the White House.

Representative Vern Buchanan of Florida, who introduced the bill in January 2025, said the changes disrupt schedules "for no good reason".

The measure would keep the US on the time currently observed between March and November - known as permanent standard time - pending Senate action.

Florida Republican Rick Scott has introduced an identical Sunshine Protection Act in the Senate, meaning the legislation could soon advance there.
